What do I do in an earthquake? Is Tokyo Japanese? How exactly do I use chopsticks? Being exactly wrong rather than inexactly right and why is English so difficult? These and hundreds of other questions are explained in this fascinating approach to a foreigner's life in Japan. The Beginner's Guide to Japan is an invaluable companion for anyone on their journey through The Land of the Rising Sun whether directing a taxi, ordering pizza by telephone or trying to unravel the mysteries of kanji. And why exactly are all those people waving red batons at each and every construction site?

The Beginner Guide to Japan JM Hewitt 9781497577633 Books

Fascinating book, lots of terrific first-hand information and anecdotes about adjusting to life in Japan.
It should be read by anyone planning to move to Japan.
There are many little errors that a good proofreader would have caught, and they are very distracting when reading. Also, lots of useful topics are treated in one page or less. It leaves the reader wanting more. But all in all, highly recommended for anyone interested in the subject.

The Beginner Guide to Japan JM Hewitt 9781497577633 Books Reviews

As a long-term resident of Japan, I was initially suspicious of books in the genre "Japan Explained In a Nutshell". However, after browsing the chapter titles, I was delighted to find numerous subjects that vexed me no end when I first came to Japan. I wish this book was around when I first came to Japan; it would have saved me a lot of time, effort and headaches. Written in a compact, easy to digest style, sprinkled with delightful examples of what you should NOT do in many social situations, but this book had me alternately crying with laughter and sighing to myself "Oh yeah, that sounds like me!".

This book does not attempt to be an encyclopaedia of Japan, but rather a very practical guide to some of the more familiar conundrums that you will find as you navigate the early months of Japan residency.

Mr. Hewitt has written a sequel "The Expat's Guide to Japan" that I have also read. It is well worth its weight (digital or otherwise) in gold as it will help you avoid one of the many invisible potholes in the business landscape in Japan.
